Hiring a skip from Watton at Stone Skip Hire rather than using the local dump

So you've been staring at all the accumulated rubbish around your home and garden for far too long, the time has come for some action, but what are your options?

  • Take the rubbish to the tip yourself
  • Hire a skip from Watton at Stone Skip Hire

Taking rubbish to the local tip

You start off by loading all of your rubbish into the family car, taking extra care not to wreck the interior, usually failing miserably, then spend an age waiting in line at the local household waste recycling centre. When you finally get to the front, you start rushing back and forth as if your life depended on it. You have to be quick or before you know it, the car in front leaves and the ones behind start sounding their horn at you.

The operator then informs you that you can't dispose of this or that in this particular skip, it has to go in the skip at the other end of the compound. They then go on to examine exactly what is in the various black bin bags in your posession.

As if that isn't bad enough, woe betide anyone who is trying to dispose of old plaster or rubble from a DIY job as they are likely to be told that they won't accept it as it's viewed as 'trade waste'.

Just when you think you're done, you realise that a stray nail or screw, left by a previous user is now firmly embedded in your car tyre. This option is going to put a strain on your wallet as well as your blood pressure.

Hiring a skip from Watton at Stone Skip Hire for all your rubbish

The skip is delivered by Watton at Stone Skip Hire to your property at your convenience, you load it up at your own pace, it's collected when full, you now have a tidy house and garden. It's a tough choice, but which of these two options would you choose?

But don't skips from Watton at Stone Skip Hire need to be covered by a special permit?

In short, the answer is sometimes, but don't worry, we are more than happy to arrange that for you should you wish.

If you decide that hiring a skip is the best way to dispose of all your rubbish and need it placed on a road, you will need a skip permit from your local council. The requirements surrounding skip permits are detailed in the Highways Act 1980: section 139, 140 & 140a, Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984, Section 65, Builders Skip (Markings) Regulations 1984, (S.I 1984 No.1933) and the Environmental Protection Act 1990 Section 34. Don't worry, you won't have to sit for a law degree before you hire a skip, at Watton at Stone Skip Hire, we can take care of this side of things on your behalf, in fact some local authorities, such as Hertfordshire for example, insist on it, but for those of you that want to adopt a completely DIY approach to the skip hiring process, or are in need of a little light reading to help you sleep, do read on!

Sorting out a skip permit yourself is not as easy as you'd think!

The first thing you will need to do is check your local councils skip hire permit guidelines, just check out their website or give them a call. If you are not sure who your local council is, the "Find your Local Authority" tool on Direct.gov.uk website is pretty useful especially in Hertfordshire.

Be aware that some councils in Hertfordshire insist that you apply directly to them for a skip permit, whereas the majority require the application to be made by the skip hire company itself. Also remember that some councils have a surcharge if you want the skip permit within three days of your application.

There is also the case where different councils in Hertfordshire have different expiry dates, and it is well worth checking when you apply, so you can arrange a suitable collection date for the skip. If you are considering long term skip hire you will need to submit another application, and may be asked to pay a surcharge, another good reason to let Watton at Stone Skip Hire sort it out for you.

The Hertfordshire council that requires a direct application for a skip hire permit.

If your local Hertfordshire council happen to be one of the few that requires you to apply directly to them for skip hire permits, then good luck! It can all get pretty complicated as there is no standard procedure for the application process. The rules of one Hertfordshire council for skip hire permits will differ from the next. So the sooner the rules are standardised to make it the responsibility of the skip hire company to deal with skip hire permit applications the better.

Skip hire and permits are simple in Hertfordshire.

Fortunately, Hertfordshire County Council insist on professional skip hire companies making the application for skip permits and the following is what they require:

  • It is illegal to place a skip on the highway without permission from the Highway Authority.
  • Hertfordshire County Council state that a skip licence is necessary when a skip is placed on the highway.
  • The Hertfordshire County council require Watton at Stone Skip Hire to provide them with proof of £10m Public Liability Insurance.
  • Only professional skip hire companies, such as Watton at Stone Skip Hire, can apply for and are granted skip licences.
  • The council do state that there is no automatic right to have a skip on the highway outside your home and that wherever possible they will ask for a skip to be placed on your land.

When considering if it is possible to grant a licence or not Hertfordshire County Council will take into account the following points:

  • The traffic volumes and speed of traffic on the street in question.
  • Visibility on the given road. Does the skip cause a danger by reducing visibility?
  • Available width of the highway the skip is to be placed on.
  • Will the skip cause any disruption to other road users? The site may affect pedestrian crossings, cycle lanes or bus lanes.
  • Will the skip cause problems with access to any premises?
  • The effect it will have on parking, and restrictions, because a skip cannot be placed on a yellow line during the time of the restriction.
  • Will the skip interfere with any planned or existing roadworks?
  • Will the skips presence interfere with any other local and specific issues, for example shopping areas at Christmas?

The Highway Authority will visit the site of your skip to inspect the condition of the road, path or verge before the skip is delivered so that if the skip causes any subsequent damage, this can be fairly assessed.

If you would like to hire a skip from Watton at Stone Skip Hire, why not drop us a line for a chat or fill in our contact form and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
